Ossuis ex Musicae
![]() Hey Deadlings, It's been awhile. How are you? I have something cool to show you! ![]() Yep, that's a skeleton made out of cassette tapes. Brian Dettmer is an artist who uses old media items, like tapes and books, to create amazing works of art. There are more pictures of the skeleton, which was part of a 2007 exhibition at the International Museum of Surgical Science in Chicago, here (potentially NSFW ad at the top.) If you want to see his other pieces, check out his flickr stream or there's a piece on his "book autopsies" here. Warning, if you don't like to see books that have been sliced and diced, I don't recommend those last two links ;-) -A Labels: anthony, book, cassette tapes, international museum of surgical science, sculpture, skeleton Jul 25, 2009
Welcome to my Nuclear Family
![]() Hey Deadlings, Ok, so this isn't really a craft, per se, but it's still cool. The website is called "Damn Interesting" though, so I suppose that's a given. So, the thing about nuclear waste is that it stays harmful for a very long time, about 10,000 years, give or take.. Long enough that we, and our great-great-great-grandchildren will be dust before the waste is safe for human contact. Therein, however, lies the problem. How does one effectively communicate danger to a civilization we know nothing about? To figure that out, the Department of Energy assembled what they called the "Futures Panel" to solve the problem. They finally decided on a written message (which reads like something out of Orwell's "1984") along with scientific charts, and architecture designed to inspire a visceral response -- in this case, of avoidance. Now, obviously, since this is a government facility, it had to be done as cheaply and efficiently as possible, but some of the proposed ideas are pretty cool. My favorite is the field of thorns, rather reminiscent of Sleeping Beauty. The full article is here on the Damn Interesting website. -Anthony Labels: anthony, architecture, Damn Interesting, nuclear waste Jun 20, 2009

Giving something back
![]() Hey Deadlings, I know it's been awhile. I also know that I don't normally dip into the serious with my posts, but for some reason this spoke to me. I've been saving the link for awhile, then I found it again and decided I had to share. Leprosy Bandages I'd love to get together a group and do a mass donation, if anyone is interested. -Anthony Labels: anthony, bandage, cool link, crochet, knitting, leprosy Jan 31, 2009
Queen's Knight to Bishop A6
![]() Hey Deadlings, So, I like art that's also functional. I also like board games. I especially like board games if they're bloody wars played out in miniature. How can I combine all these things? I'm so glad you asked! Now you can have your game and see it to! (Ok, ok, I know that was awful, I'm sorry! I just couldn't resist.) -Anthony Jan 24, 2009
Not now, I'm levitating!
![]() So, in keeping with my theme of bookcases, or something, I present this! What better way to convince your friends that you have phenomenal cosmic powers, especially if you're stuck in an itty-bitty living space? Plus, it just looks cool! -Anthony Labels: anthony, bookshelf, cool link, home improvement, instructables Jan 17, 2009
Put...the candle...back!
![]() Hey Deadlings, So, if you're like me, you always dreamed of have a secret room hidden behind a bookshelf somewhere in your house. Well, now that dream can be a reality! I don't know about you, but I would put these all over my house! -Anthony Labels: anthony, bookshelf, cool link, home improvement, popular mechanics, secret, young frankenstein |
