News to Abuse -- PUBLIC / The Purge of 2012!
« on: November 15, 2012, 12:57:20 PM »
Hola, forumites!

The following members are in danger of being purged since their post count is ZERO. If your name is on this list, simply post something, somewhere, to let me know you like lurking. It can even be in the Introductions thread and say, "Hi, I'm just lurking." Seriously. It's fine to lurk, just don't needlessly clutter up mah database.

Projects from the Online Zine -- PUBLIC / Re: Miss Monster's Favors
« on: December 04, 2011, 03:49:58 PM »
I just wanted to wrap this up for you guys:

The owner of Armour Etch actually sent me pretty ... we'll call it  "strongly worded" ... email about this.  I said I would amend my words if she could give me the proof (never mind the warning labels on her own products), and asked her multiple times for a copy of the MSDS (which is what Mel posted up there).  She never responded.  A few days after this, "tallman" showed up on the forum.  That is his only post, ever.  I suspect it is her or a friend or employee of hers.  I kept waiting for either a lawsuit or a MSDS; neither ever appeared.

Just thought everyone would like to know, now that it's all blown over.

News to Abuse -- PUBLIC / Forum Registration Now Requires Approval
« on: September 15, 2010, 09:19:37 AM »
Greetings AntiCrafters,

This won't really affect anyone who is already a forum member, but I just wanted to let everyone know that registration now requires Admin approval.  We generally don't have a lot of spammers, but they are starting to show up more frequently, and I'd rather have them peddle their Canadian drugs at me when they try to get in than leave them around the forum to bother you all.

For the record, this doesn't mean we're becoming exclusive or anything, just that we'll try to verify that a non-spamming human is behind each application with a little bit more than a captcha.

I was going to post this here, but then I realized only Moderators can comment on this board, and I wanted it to be open to everybody.  So I posted it on FB and am linking it here.

Don't forget that anyone can start a new thread inside a board.  If your conversation starts to wander off the original topic, feel free to start a new thread, and post a link to it in the old thread.  You'll be helping out your fellow forum junkies. :)

outman02 has been banned.  I would have done it sooner, but my internet connection at home dropped out after a thunderstorm yesterday.  (I am assured it will be back on today.)  Thanks for reporting his posts, everybody!

News to Abuse -- PUBLIC / Did You Get Some Personal Message Spam?
« on: January 31, 2010, 11:57:38 PM »
Just a heads up:  I've gotten several reports from folks today about a certain "ManInBlackk" sending spamy PMs. (Thank you, reporters!)  He's been banned.  If you get a PM from him, don't click any of the links and just delete it right away.

News to Abuse -- PUBLIC / Forum updates and Fiber Board added!
« on: January 19, 2010, 10:09:26 AM »
Just wanted to let everyone know that we've collected the various fiber arts under a new board ("Fiber Arts" - wow, how imaginative!) and added a new board for quilting.

Also, I updated the forum software this morning; let me or a moderator know if there is anything that has gone absolutely wonky since about 10am Eastern.

I tend to be a process knitter (linger over a project for months) rather than an end-product knitter (must complete things as soon as possible), so my suggestion is to rip the entire thing out and start over with less stitches.  Then it will be more narrow, and the extra yarn will go to more length.  Trust me, I understand why you might not be thrilled at the thought of knitting the whole damn thing over, but I'm just throwin' my 2 cents in.

14
I totally lied.

Things have been crazier than usual at chez Zabet, and catching this Memorial Day cold really threw a monkey wrench into the works.  I will get to this, but it'll probably be finished by the end of the month.

How to insert photos into a post:

When writing your post, use the Insert Image icon located under the Italics icon.  An opening and closing img tag will appear.  Put the URL of the photo between the tags.  You'll have code that looks like this--I'm replacing the brackets of the tags with parenthesis here:

(img)http://theanticraft.com/images/beltane2008/colororange.png(/img)

will give you:

If the photo is larger than 300px wide or tall, it will be resized in the forums.  If it's smaller than 300px wide or tall, it will show at 100% original size.

But what about Flickr?

Go to the Flickr photo page.  In this example I'll use the photo that is located here: http://flickr.com/photos/yarnschool-07-1/2273993231/in/set-72157602336614731/. Note: That url goes to the Flicker Photo Page and CANNOT be used with the Insert Image icon.

click on the "Share This" button at the top of the image.

From the menu that drops down, choose "Grab the HTML."

Inside the "Grab the HTML" section you have two options:
   • choose the size (We recommend either "Small (240 x 160)" since the Medium or larger sizes will just be resized by the forum.)
   • choose the radio button for BBCode, NOT HTML.  It won't work if you don't choose BBCode.

Copy the code that appears and paste it into your forum posting.  When you preview or post, the image will appear.

So, posting the BBCode (I'm replacing the brackets in the code with parentheses so you can see the code):
(url=http://www.flickr.com/photos/yarnschool-07-1/2273993231/)(img)http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2329/2273993231_2674f5de32_m.jpg(/img)(/url)
(url=http://www.flickr.com/photos/yarnschool-07-1/2273993231/)IMGP5319 by knitting_zabet, on Flickr(/url)

Will give you:

IMGP5319 by knitting_zabet, on Flickr

What about NSFW images?

NSFW images are those that show boobs/nips, pubes, butts, genitals, and sex toys shaped to look like genitals.  If you have a NSFW image you would like to share, please link to it using the Insert Hyperlink icon. I'm replacing the brackets of the tags with parenthesis here

Here's an awesome pick of a hot panda!
(url)http://theanticraft.com/images/beltane2008/colororange.png(/url)

will give you

Hi all,

This is just a quick announcement to say that over the next two weeks I'm going to get my ass in gear and add a lot of errata from the book that hasn't been posted yet.  I'll put it here and also over on the book site: http://theanticraft.com/book/errata.htm

I'll remove this post when I've finished.

And to everyone who has bought a copy of the book: you rock, thank you!

(Edited to remove typo.)

Projects from the Online Zine -- PUBLIC / Miss Monster's Favors
« on: March 10, 2008, 01:40:38 PM »
Not having worked with glass etching before, I thought this tidbit was worth passing on from a reader:

Quote
Hey all, I adore your site (yadda yadda, I'm sure you hear this all the time), but I was a bit alarmed by some instructions in one of the projects. In Miss Monster's Favors from the Samhain 2006 issue, she mentions rubbing the etching cream with her fingers while she washes it off and says that it's weak and doesn't burn. The cream she's using, Armour Etch, has HF as its active ingredient, which is VERY dangerous. Rubbing it with your fingers is an extremely bad idea. If you're curious for specifics, check out the wikipedia page (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hydrofluoric_acid), but the basic problem is this: HF reacts with the calcium in your bones and not your skin, so while you won't get burns, and in fact it may not hurt at all due to reactions with your nerves, it could be killing you without you even feeling it. It takes very little exposure to cause real health problems - check out the health square. 4 is the highest possible ranking! If I remember correctly, the damage it does can be cumulative too, and it takes surprisingly little to actually kill you. I'm all for glass etch when used safely, but I thought you might want to know about how very dangerous this stuff can be if treated casually and used like Miss Monster's directions suggest.

Thanks, Alex!

(modified to add source, as I'm a dumbass)

Sonofacrapwhoregoat.  I think I found the problem while trying to add this to Ravelry today:

Quote
Page 31, under Materials and Tools reads:
US #8 (5mm) straight or circular knitting needles (or size needed to obtain gauge)
US #8 (5mm) 12" (30cm) or 16" (41cm) circular knitting needle (or size needled to obtain gauge)

It SHOULD read:
US #5 (3.75mm) dpns or circular knitting needles (or size needed to obtain gauge)

ALSO!

Quote
Page 31, under Gauge reads:
18 sts x 24 rows = 4" (10cm) in stockinette

It SHOULD read:
24 sts x 32 rows = 4" (10cm) in stockinette

Hope that helps, y'all.

Projects from the Book -- PUBLIC / Re: Skylla
« on: February 25, 2008, 09:29:41 AM »
I'm not sure if this will help (I've not managed to make a Skylla yet), but Robyn Wade (who did the Immaculate Heart) and another one of my SNB'ers had problems with stitch counts and here's what they came up with:

Quote
Okay, here are my notes written in Robynese so a professional might want to rewrite them

Note: my rewrites only concern the stitches on the facing side of the double knitting, you are still slipping all of the stitches on the other side with the exception of the edgings which are written outside of the brackets.

Row 16: Sl1, ssk, k2, [k2, m1, k3, m1, k2] k2, k2tog, k1
Row 17: Sl1, k3, [k2, m1, k3, m1, k2] k4
Row 18- 19: as is
Row 20: Sl1, ssk, k1, [k3, m1, k3, m1] k1, k2tog, k1
Row 21: Sl1, k2, [k3, m1, k3, m1, k3] k3
Row 22-23: as is
Row 24: Sl1, ssk [k3, m1, k5, m1, k3] k2tog, k1
Row 25: Sl1, k1 [k3, m1, k5, m1, k3] k2
Row 26-27: as is
Row 28: Ssk, [k3, m1, k7, m1, k3] k2og
Row 29: Sl1, [k3, m1, k7, m1, k3] k1
Row 30-31: as is

The problem with the pattern is that in each instance of the (KSl inc) there either should have been the removal of a (k1, Sl1) or it should have been clearer in the instructions that the (k1,sl1) was that of a previous pair and not an additional set. I also found the m1 increase to be way easier to do after the fact than the tbl that was called for since to doesn't require the person to find the old stitch and maneuver around the slipped stitch. It also looks neater.

Hope that helps!

I can't tell you how many things I've fucked up due to my poor math skilz, so don't feel bad.  I pretty much hate math and was always bad at it, so I find it cosmically hilarious that my main pastime how involves SO MUCH MATH.
