Projects from the Book -- PUBLIC / Re: Skull Hat [YAR!]
« on: January 21, 2008, 08:58:50 AM »
I looked for the Knit Picks Wool but don't know if it's available in the UK.

Knit Picks is only available via mail order from the Knit Picks catlog or online store: http://www.knitpicks.com

Though any light worsted should do.

I have 150 sts MC, 150 sts CC

So, wait, have you cast on 300 sts total?  Because if you are getting 5 sts per inch, that means you have a hat about 5 feet around  (300 sts divided by 5 sts = 60 inches.)

If you have 150 sts total, you have a hat 30 inches around (150 sts divided by 5 sts = 30 inches), which is still much larger than the circumference of the average human head (about 21 inches).

You see, the pattern calls for 6 sts per inch, and not getting gauge means all the measurements are going to be thrown off.  You either need thinner yarn or smaller needles, or both if you can't knit your current yarn on smaller needles.

Sorry for doing this all in inches but I don't have a calculator handy for converting to cm!

Anyway, to sum up:
1. Make sure you've not cast on twice as many sts as you need.  (you only have to cast on in the MC)
2. Gauge is important.  You need to devote some time to figuring it out or you will always have a problem  when knitting from a pattern and you sub yarn or needles or simply knit more loosely or tightly than whoever wrote the pattern.

You actually just cast on in the one color - black or whatever you're using for you MC.  The two-color part comes later, and this ensures that  the hat has a black bottom no matter if you wear it right-side-out or wrong-side-out.  (C'est réversible!)

P.S. I'm merging this topic with the YAR topic under the Projects From The Book Board.

I believe, but I don't have the pattern or the hats right in front of me to check, that she wants you to cast on in only one color, so, yes, you will have a black row at the very bottom no matter which side you are wearing on the outside.  Will someone who has knit it please weigh in?

Uh, I would have titled this the name of the pattern, but I am at work and the book is at home. Don't ask me how I can part with it. I did carry it around for about 3 days.

I gotcha covered.

And there's no reason to apologize for House pride.

Did you run into any problems in the pattern? If so, let me know!

Page 38, under column Squid, row 8 should read as follows:

Row 8: sl1, m1, k1, (k1 below, sl top st), (k1, sl1) three times, (k1 below, sl top st), k1, m1, k1

Thanks, Ann!

Also notice that the HELP tab in the upper-ish left hand corner covers the basics really well.
