Swamp Witch
« on: July 06, 2008, 08:44:53 PM »
O.K.
I did it.

I used 4 types of yarn: Caron SimplySoft in Heather, and Seafoam green.
I also used some4 random stashy alryclic junk in a christmas green color, and I used Red Heart (something mohair style) in a blue/grey mix.

I really think this sucks ass. I used size 17 needles and I cast on 48 stitches. I didn't have enough yarn to make it nearly as long as I wanted, and My bound of edge is about 3 inches shorter than my cast on edge.

I have yarn and I'm having mom and dad buy me buying size 35 needles tomorrow so I can make a proper one for the fair.
Don't criticise this and tell me what went wrong. I know. It sucks. But it was a good way to get rid of stash yarn. Boo ya!

Seriously though, everyone I know is getting one of these this year (those peopel who don't knit that is. The rest of ya'll can make em for yerselves, rofl.). My aunt, my cousin, my friend in england, my best friends's girlfriend..

errr.
Oh and I cast on foir this at 8 last night, and stopped for the night at 3 am, picked up at 11 this morning, finished at 3. Talk about instant gratification.

I see no suckage in that picture. probably not even close up. if you can't brag about something you made cause you know it's not perfect, then just say nothing. and then "thank you" when someboday says something nice. keep the "I'm glad you like it, but really it sucks" to yourself..,..(not here, I mean, here everything hangs out, I meant in the real world---)

Yeah. Sure. It sucks ass.

NOT!

Consider it practice for the 35s, and then you're just gonna kick some serious butt when you do the next one...which will be flawless...

I pulled it out agian today (I had stuck it in a closet). It's wonderful for keeping my shoulders warm when sitting at the ocmputer (Air conditioner is in the window right next to me, and constantly blowing on me while I'm at the ocmputer). and the color matches my jeans.

So it's not *total* suckage..it just has a few things wrong with it.

fuck it, it giuves it character.

I do wish it was longer though, and not so wide.

Once I get my 35s...bwahahaha.

The second one is goign to be in a orange/red/pink color mixture thingy. I'm able to get rid of more of my novelty yarn. WOO!

It looks lovely to me :) If i had some decent yarn I'd give swamp witch a try. Ponchos were all the range not too long ago, and it acts like a poncho. I wouldn't wear it in public though (nor would I wear a poncho), but just snuggle up with it.
I saw the hugest thickest knitting needles a while back.  it was like 'must get!'. at the mo, the largest I have are 6mm.

I think you need a floaty yarn for it, yes? Whatever you've used seems to work nice *nods*

The beauty of this pattern is that it's wonderful for stashbusting.

I have several skeins of crappy novelty yarn (Fun Fur, glitter, Slubs...ew.) in my stash from when I first started knitting. I picked up most of them at a hobby lobby end of season sale for 25 cents a peice.
Now I know why.

Lea, I'm using 3 strands of standard worsted (Caron Simply Soft and Red HEart Super Saver) and one strand of "Novelty" yarn(Yarn Bee Soft Delight), which is worsted weight as well.

You might try looking at the ones on ravelry, it's where I got my inspiration to actually cast on the thing.

I tend to be a process knitter (linger over a project for months) rather than an end-product knitter (must complete things as soon as possible), so my suggestion is to rip the entire thing out and start over with less stitches.  Then it will be more narrow, and the extra yarn will go to more length.  Trust me, I understand why you might not be thrilled at the thought of knitting the whole damn thing over, but I'm just throwin' my 2 cents in.

I really think I'll end up doing that. I'm working on "Hellfire", a swamp witch done in tones of orange and red which really does look like flames. I'd ripped and reknit it about 3 times now, and I finally got it right.

Swamp Witch was the very first Anti-craft project I made!  I used the exact yarns and colors called for in the original pattern, I'm anal that way!  I don't wear it, but I love to snuggle up with it.

I want to make sure I'm not a complete doofus...the pattern doesn't call for cast-on, but simply that you knit into the fringe? How do you manage a cast-off then? I think I'm being thick, but I couldn't get my brain around it in the instructions. I might want to try making it in the fall...

I did the weird not-really-a-cast-on cast on, but found the cast off just didn't make sense to me.  So I just did a regular cast off and fringed the edge with a (BIG) crochet hook in the usual way.

Just finished Hellfire (You'll see.) which is a Swamp Witch.
I did the knit into the fringe cast on, but the cast off..
"What was I supposed to do?"
Ten minutes later
"ARGH CURSE YOU ANTICRAFTY PEOPLE FOR CONFUSING ME SO!"
Ten minutes later
"HULK..SMASH."
Three minutes, a cup of tea, and throwing my needles to the floor later..
"I'll bind off loosely and attach fringe normally. Fuck."

So here's the end result.

Somethin's Burnin' Dun-nun-nun Dun-nun-nun.
The Shawl! The Shawl! The shawl is on FIRE!

Now you see why I call it Hellfire? I love love LOVE the color combo. It's awesome.

I used one strand of Red Heart (I have half a skein of that stuff left) in Carrot, 2 strands of Caron Simply Soft- one strand each of Rubine Red and Mango (that's the bright orange/yellow you see), and one strand of a fuzzy novelty yarn, Yarn Bee Soft Delight, in Red. I bought one skein of that softy fuzzy yarn becuase it was just so soft and cuddly...Anyway. I have none (NONE) of the fuzzy yarn left, but half skeins of each of the normal yarn. *nodnod*

I'm frogging the old one, reknitting. I love these too much to let it sit and languish in a closet. I have a second skein of the blue fuzzy yarn I might put with it to bulk it up some, and give it a nice halo.
Plus I wont ever use my size 35s for anything else, I don't think. ^.^

SA-WEET!
Very nice job and color combo, Rogue.

So, is there anyone out there who can explain the cast off for this shawl? I will make it eventually and I really, really want to understand how to do it.
