[< French †meslange (1538 in Middle French; 1380 in Middle French in form meslinge), mélange mixture (1680) < Middle French mesler to mix (see MEDDLE v.) + -ange, suffix derived from the Germanic base of -ING suffix1. Compare Old French meslance (12th cent.; see -ANCE suffix).
