Rick's Socks

She knit several pairs of socks; we remember these best. She knit them for many reasons: they kept her occupied while waiting, they kept her calm when anxious, and they would keep him warm through chemo.

Men's medium (8.5" circumference)

Materials

• Patons Classic Merino Wool [100% merino wool; 223yds/204m per 3.5oz/100g skein], color: evergreen mix, 2 skeins
• 5 dpns in size necessary to achieve gauge
• yarn/tapestry needle

Gauge

20 sts per 4"/10cm in stockinette.

Directions

Begin:

Cast on 44 sts. Join to knit in the round, being careful not to twist.

Knit 2x2 rib for 1.5 inches

Leg:

Work in Broken Rib as follows:
Rounds 1 and 2: Knit in stockinette
Rounds 3 and 4: Knit in 2x2 rib

Repeat last 4 rounds until leg measures 8" or desired length.

Heel Flap:

Divide stitches so there are 11 on each of 4 needles.

Starting on needle 1:

1: *Sl 1, k1* repeat across needles 1 and 2. Turn
2: Sl 1, purl across needles 2 and 1. Turn

Repeat last two rows until heel flap measures 2.25 inches, ending with a RS row.

Turn Heel:

Round 1: Sl1, P 13, p2tog, p1
Round 2: Sl1, K7, k2tog, k1
Round 3: sl1, p8, p2tog, p1
Round 4: sl1, k9, k2tog, k1
Round 5: sl1, p10, p2tog, p1
Round 6: sl1, k11, k2tog, k1
Round 7: sl1, p12, p2tog
Round 8: k13, k2tog

(14 sts rem on first and second needles)

Gussets:

Using needle 2, pick up and knit 11 stitches along heel flap.

Knit across to next 22 stitches.

Pick up and knit 11 stitches along heel flap, then knit remaining 7 stitches.

Needle one now begins in the middle of the heel stitches.

Round 1: Knit across needle 1 to last 3 sts, k2tog, k1. Knit across instep stitches on needles 2 and 3. Needle 4: k1, ssk, knit to end of needle.
Round 2: Knit one round even.

Repeat last two rounds until 44 sts remain.

Foot:

Knit even until foot length is 2.5" shorter than the total foot length.

Decrease every third round as noted:
Round 1: (Decrease Round) Knit across needle 1 to last 3 sts, k2tog, k1, Needle 2: k1, ssk, knit across. Needle 3: Knit to last 3 sts, k2tog, k1. Needle 4: k1, ssk, knit to end.
Round 2: Knit one round even.
Round 3: Knit one round even.

Repeat these three rounds two times more.

Decrease every other row as noted:
Round 1: (Decrease Round) Knit as directed above.
Round 2: Knit one round even.

Repeat these two rounds three times more.

Knit across needle one stitches onto needle 4.

12 sts remain. Slip 8 instep stitches onto one needle.

Finishing:

Graft remaining stitches. Weave in all ends.
