Which way to go? A zigzagging scarf with two variations: Ripe and Mere.

Finished Measurements

Dependent on yarn weight and number of stitches cast on. Example is 5x70".

Materials

  • Two yarns of similar weight in amounts enough to make a scarf. Example uses:
    • Color A: Debbie Bliss Merino Aran [100% merino wool; 85yds/77m per 1.75oz/50g ball]; color: green, 2 balls.
    • Color B: Jo Sharp Silkroad Aran [85% wool, 10% silk, 5% cashmere; 93yds/85m per 1.75oz/50g ball]; color: 135 Merlot, 1 ball.
  • Needles 2-3 sizes larger than recommended for weight of yarn.
  • Crochet hook appropriate to yarn weight.

Gauge

Dependant upon yarn and needle selection.

Directions for Ripe
(skip down to directions for Mere)

Begin:

Cast on desired number of sts (multiple of 4+2).

With Color A: Knit 2 rows.

Right Slant:

1: (Color A) k2, [sl 2, yo, k2tog] repeat to last 4 sts, sl 2, k2
2: (Color A) k2, [sl 2, p2] repeat to last 4 sts, sl 2, k2.
3: (Color B) k2, [yo, k2tog, sl 2] repeat to last 4 sts, yo, k2tog, k2.
4: (Color B) k2, [p2, sl 2] repeat to last 4 sts, p2, k2.

Repeat until desired length of section has been reached. (Example knit to 4".)

Left Slant:

1: (Color A) k2, [sl 2, ssk, yo] repeat to last 4 sts, sl 2, k2
2: (Color A) k2, [sl 2, p2] repeat to last 4 sts, sl 2, k2
3: (Color B) k2, [ssk, yo, sl 2] to last 4sts, ssk, yo, k 2.
4: (Color B) k2, p tbl, p1, [sl 2, p2] to last 2 sts, k 2.

Repeat until length equals the Right Slant section.

End:

Alternate right and left slant sections until desired length has been reached. (Example knit to 70".)

With Color A: Knit two rows.

Finishing:

Single crochet a border around the scarf in Color A, 1 crochet stitch to each knit stitch (horizontally) or row (vertically), except where the direction changes. In peaks, sc, dc, sc into apex stitch, in valleys skip over the nadir stitch. Weave in ends and block, paying special attention to pin peaks and nadirs into crisp points.

  • Contrasting Color: Lamb's Pride Bulky [85% wool/ 15% mohair; 125 yds/114m per 4oz/113g skein] color: M05 Onyx, 1 skein
  • US 13/9.0mm knitting needles
  • US 10/J/6.0mm crochet hook

Gauge

11 sts = 4"

This pattern uses short rows to makes the points crisp. Short rows are given a letter designation; full rows are given a number designation.

Directions for Mere Indecision
(skip up to directions for Ripe)

Begin:

CO 22 sts (or any even number)

First Right Slant: (differs from subsequent Right Slants)

1 (RS): K2, *yo, K2tog*. Repeat from * to last two stitches, K2.
2 (WS): K2, purl to last two stitches, K2.

Repeat rows 1 and 2 nine more times.

Left Slant:

A: K2, turn.
B: K2, turn.
1 (RS): K2, *ssk, yo*. Repeat from * to last two stitches, K2.
2 (WS): K2, purl to last two stitches, K2.

Repeat rows 1 and 2 nine more times (but not rows A and B).

Right Slant:

Row 1: (RS) K2, *yo, K2tog*. Repeat from * to last two stitches, K2.
A: K2, turn.
B: K2, turn.
2: (WS) K2, purl to last two stitches, K2.

Repeat rows 1 and 2 nine more times (but not rows A and B).

End:

Alternate Left Slant, Right Slant until 1 yard of yarn is left.

Bind off; weave in ends.
