Wa na na na na na na na
Bat Shawl!

Updated 7/31/08

I couldn't help it. Besides, lots of guys knit. Have you seen The Panopticon? Brooklyn Tweed? Criminy Jickets? I just wanted something warm to snuggle up in after a long, cold night of fighting crime alongside my hero. I know he'll understand.

Finished Measurements

The shawl pictured measures 60"/152.4cm across the top and 30"/76.2cm from the center top to the bottom point. If you desire a significantly larger shawl you might want to add a sixth row of bats.

Materials

  • KnitPicks Gloss Sock [70% merino wool, 30% silk, 220 yds/201 m per 1.75oz/50g hank] color #23865 black; 3 hanks
  • US 4/3.5 mm 32" circular knitting needle (or longer)
  • Stitch markers
  • Tapestry needle
  • Pins for blocking

Gauge

Gauge is not critical for this project, as you can affect the size of the shawl considerably during blocking.

Design Notes

This shawl is worked from the bottom point up, then a border is added. All knitting is done back-and-forth, but a circular needle is required for the large number of stitches.

Special Stitch
CDD (centered double decrease): Slip two stitches at the same time as if to knit two together, knit one, then pass the slipped stitches over (decreases three sts to one).

Block shawl to measurements, or to desired size. Weave in all ends. If you wish, you may work an applied I-cord or a few rows of crochet across the top edge to prevent it from rolling.
